Who We Are
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded on October 11, 1890.
Objectives
Historical - to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence
Educational - to carry out George Washington's injunction, in his farewell address to the American people, "to promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge, thus developing an enlightened public opinion."
Patriotic - to cherish, maintain, and extend the institutions of American freedom; to foster true patriotism and love of country; and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.
--------------
The Society was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia on June 4, 1891, and incorporated in 1896 by an Act of the United States Congress. President Grover Cleveland signed the Charter. Under this Act of Incorporation, the Society reports annually to the United States Congress through the Smithsonian Institution.
The President General and 11 Executive Officers, elected for three-year terms, direct the Society's business affairs. These officers, together with 21 Vice Presidents General (7 elected annually for a three-year term) and 54 State Regents (including the District of Columbia, Mexico, France, and the United Kingdom) comprise the National Board of Management. Regular and special meetings of the National Board of Management are held February, April, June or July (before or after the DAR Continental Congress), October, December, and at the call of the President General.
Nearly 786,000 members have joined the NSDAR since it was founded. There are now over 170,000 members in Chapters in all fifty states and the Bahamas, Bermuda, District of Columbia, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Germany and Japan. The National Headquarters covers a full city block near the White House.
"Our emblem is a golden wheel banded round with deepest blue, Each shining spoke tipped with a star the distaff shining through: The only jewel in the world that money cannot buy without such proof of ancestry as no one can deny."
--Clara Treadway Weir
